There’s no chance in hell this really happens.
However, with all the talk of San Francisco suddenly being a real player for Tom Brady in free agency it’s worth looking at the mind-boggling scenario.
With numerous reports around the NFL from extremely credible sources, there has been legitimate chatter over the last few days – but really the last 24 hours – that would suggest the 49ers moving on from Jimmy G to sign Brady, which would mean Bill Belichick is an even bigger genius than everyone already thinks he is.
I’d be all for it. You know what you’re getting with Garoppolo compared to any other option you can choose from to replace Brady, and despite people thinking he was a choking dog in the final moments of the Super Bowl. I think the biggest factor people are ignoring is the coaching.
I’d like to think that if he has a confident coach like Belichick or McDaniels in his ear during crunch time he would have much more confidence in himself and those around him to finish the job. Kyle Shanahan is a walking mental case when the game is on the line and I truly believe his nerves infected the rest of the 49ers down the stretch.
Jimmy proved he could make the throws necessary to operate in the Patriots system when he was here during games against the Cardinals and Dolphins and was respectable while in San Fran. The real question now is what the Patriots would have to give John Lynch in a trade in order to lure him back to New England.
Belichick gave up Jimmy G for a late second round pick, so does he give up the Pats’ first rounder this year? That depends. If reports of them being active on the trade market are true then the pick is expendable. You still have a young receiver in Harry and a young back in Michel that still have room to grow, and they wouldn’t be trying to grab the approval of a 43-year old legend, but instead be on an even playing field with another young guy under center.
If you’re Jimmy G, the transition to a “new” team is non-existent and you now have a chip on your shoulder after a team committed to you and then reneged on the deal to bring in a guy you’ve been in the shadow of seemingly your whole career – even when he was thousands of miles away.
The Brady factor in all this is actually the easiest part in my opinion. San Fran’s defense, weapons on offense coupled with the pull for Tom emotionally (the boyhood dream angle will be nauseating in about 10 minutes) all makes perfect sense compared to any other destination he could go. The “starting over” process becomes much easier when you grew up in the area.
The funniest part of it all is the asinine callers to radio stations around the country who called in chugging Bud Lights with their backwards Pats hats on saying “yah Bill’s going to get Jimmy back” following the initial trade would actually be right.
At the time of the initial trade it seemed like the stupidest idea ever, but with the way last season ended for the 49ers and the idea that Brady TRULY may consider leaving New England, it may not be that far fetched.
San Francisco is in win-now mode and there’s only one guy who could legitimately make that happen for them. Stepping away from Garoppolo after making such a big commitment to him isn’t the best look business wise, but when you’re replacing him with the GOAT fans can rationalize it fairly quickly.
Whatever happens, this would be the greatest story in the NFL in the last 10-15 years, and it would cement Bill Belichick’s legacy as a master manipulator both on and off the field. It probably won’t happen, but imagine what Gillette Stadium would be like when the 49ers travel here this year?
Tuna Bowls, Colts AFC Championship games against Peyton and the pursuit of 19-0 in 2007 would all take a backseat in terms of hype.
