Baylor University hired former Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe to steward the football program until a permanent replacement can be found next off-season. On the surface, Grobe is a great hire for several reasons. He is a program builder who has won at some of the toughest schools in the country. Whether its the Ohio or Wake Forest, Grobe has found a way to put competitive teams on the field.
The Baylor roster is probably the most talented roster he’s ever coached so I don’t doubt he’ll find a way to get the most out of his players and keep the program competitive. My issue is with Baylor University. They didn’t hire Grobe because he’s a good coach. They hired him because he’s a good man. While I can understand their thinking, I find it insulting that they would promote a coach of Grobe’s caliber as simply a good man. He is a lot more than that.
Jim Grobe is a good coach who has over 30 years of coaching experience including 18 years as a head coach. Not only is he a quality person, but he is a great teacher of the game. Do you think the suits at Baylor know that? Probably not.
The only thing Baylor board of trustees is interested in is saving face. They don’t really care what happens to the football program or the players. They are more concerned with public perception and covering their asses. That’s a shame! The players and program shouldn’t suffer because of the actions of a handful of people.
I wish Jim Grobe the best of luck. He is going to need it. The Big 12 won’t be his biggest challenge this season. It’ll be then university her works for.
