The Patriots earned a hard fought 26-19 divisional victory over the New York Jets, extending their winning streak to three games. While New England built an early lead and made key defensive stops, a wave of mid-game injuries and late-game execution errors kept the Jets within striking distance until the final seconds.
Here are seven points on the Patriots win.
1. A win is a win despite inconsistent play: The Patriots secured a crucial AFC East division victory, but the performance left plenty of room for improvement. After taking a commanding 17-3 lead into halftime, the Patriots struggled to pull away in the second half. Fumbles on offense, penalties, and defensive lulls allowed New York to stay competitive down the stretch, turning what should have been a comfortable win into a tight finish.
2. A.J. Brown struggles in his return: Making his return to the lineup, wide receiver A.J. Brown endured a difficult afternoon. Targeted 10 times by Drake Maye, Brown managed just three receptions for 27 yards and was plagued by key drops that stalled offensive drives. Brown is clearly still working through the rust and trying to get on the same page with Maye.
3. Maye has another good day at the office: Quarterback Drake Maye continued his strong trajectory with another efficient and poised performance. Maye finished 235 passing yards and three touchdown passes with zero interceptions or sacks taken. He consistently extended plays, made sound decisions under pressure, and added 24 yards on the ground to keep the chains moving.
4. Offensive line loses three starters: The victory came at a massive cost upfront, as the Patriots watched three offensive linemen leave the game due to injuries. Right tackle Morgan Moses (Ankle), left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (Hamstring) and right guard Ben Brown (Knee) all left the game and did not return. The war of attrition forced backup linemen into crucial roles midway through the game. Despite the shuffling along the front five, the group held up well enough in pass protection to prevent Maye from being sacked.
5. Doubs gets hurt: Wide receiver Romeo Doubs started the game on a high note, making a dramatic diving 42-yard touchdown catch in the first half to set the tone for the offense. However, Doubs suffered a shoulder injury on the play and exitted to the locker room. He was ruled out for the remainder of the contest, leaving the receiving corps thin.
6. Kiner the grinder: Running back Corey Kiner provided a spark in the running game, operating as a tough, physical grinder between the tackles. Kiner rushed 11 times for a team-high 57 yards while adding 88 yards on three kickoff returns. His relentless running style helped wear down the Jets defense and keep late drives on schedule.
7. Vrabel not happy after win: Despite moving to 4-2 on the season, head coach Mike Vrabel was visibly unsatisfied with his team’s overall discipline and execution. In his postgame remarks, Vrabel stressed that turning the ball over, committing self-inflicted mistakes, and letting opponents stay close in the fourth quarter will not be acceptable as the schedule toughens.
“We’re lucky to win, is probably where I’d start, but we’re happy that we won. We’ll enjoy it for about an hour, and then we’re going to focus on the next task. Fortunate, whatever. We just didn’t play very well. We tried to beat ourselves, but we made enough plays in critical situations to help us get through here today.”
