Cruise ’81 ’84 and his wife, Sue Cruise ’84, have donated $2 million to their alma mater. This contribution stands as the largest single monetary gift ever received by the URI football program, signaling a transformative era for the Rams both on the field and in the classroom.
The heart of this philanthropy is the $1.5 million Mark ’81 ’84 & Sue ’84 Cruise Endowed Scholarship program. Designed to honor Mark’s own “blue-collar” roots in Brockton, Massachusetts, the fund will prioritize student-athletes from his hometown who embody grit, determination, and pride. Having once been a student of limited means who relied on a full scholarship to “figure out” his path to college, Cruise intended for this gift to provide a lifeline for those facing similar financial hurdles. The remaining $500,000 will fund vital renovations to the football locker rooms and Meade Stadium, ensuring the program’s physical infrastructure matches its rising competitive status.
In recognition of this generosity, the university intends to name the football practice field the “Mark S. Cruise ’81 ’84 Football Practice Field.” For Mark, the naming rights are less about personal recognition and more about honoring the mentors who shaped him—specifically past coaches Peter Adrian G’72 and Fazio Bagnoli. This legacy of mentorship continues today, as current Head Coach Jim Fleming frequently cites Cruise’s journey from a four-year starter and NFL prospect to the founder of the Virtus Group as a primary example of how URI football prepares men for life after the whistle.
This investment arrives at a pinnacle of program success. The Rams are coming off a dominant 2025 season that saw them go 11-3 and claim back-to-back conference championships. While the team prepares to play its 2026 season at Centreville Bank Stadium during an $85 million facilities overhaul, the Cruises’ gift provides the stability needed to maintain this momentum. Mark credits much of this ability to give back to Sue, whom he describes as the “glue” of the family, noting that her selflessness in raising their four children allowed him the professional freedom to eventually repay the scholarship that started it all.
By establishing this endowment, the Cruises hope to spark a “multiplier effect” among other alumni. Their contribution is not just a donation to a sports program, but a vote of confidence in the university’s mission to foster academic and athletic excellence.
