UConn interim coach and offensive coordinator Gordon “Gordie” Sammis, has accepted the position of offensive coordinator at TCU. Sammis will be moving to the Big 12 to take over a high-profile position for the Horned Frogs replacing Kendal Briles who left for South Carolina earlier this week.

Sammis’s tenure at UConn has been marked by a highly effective revitalization of the program’s offense. Initially hired as the offensive line coach in 2022, he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2024 and quickly transformed the unit. In his first season calling plays, the Huskies’ offense made a massive leap, going from one of the lowest-ranked scoring units nationally to one that finished the season averaging over 30 points per game.

Under Sammis’s direction, the UConn offense consistently ranked among the best in the nation in key categories, particularly in run game efficiency and red-zone performance. The unit broke program records for points in a season and saw its rushing attack flourish, becoming a foundational strength of the team. This success led to Sammis earning back-to-back nominations for the prestigious Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach.

At TCU, Sammis will be tasked with succeeding Briles and maintaining the Horned Frogs’ tradition of high-powered offense within the Big 12 conference. His background, which includes extensive experience coaching the offensive line at multiple collegiate levels—including stints at William & Mary, Lafayette, and VMI—suggests a continued focus on a physical, ground-and-pound attack, though he has demonstrated a capacity for a balanced and productive scheme.

For the Horned Frogs, the hiring of Sammis represents bringing in one of the most respected rising minds in offensive coaching. For UConn, the move creates a significant vacancy that new head coach Jason Candle will have to fill as he looks to build his staff in Storrs.

Sammis will be coaching the Huskies on December 27th in the Fenway Bowl against Army before departing for Fort Worth and the Horned Frogs.
