7 Points on the Patriots 35-31 loss to the Bills

FOXBOROUGH- The Patriots blew a 21-0 lead en route to a 35-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills, snapping their 10 game winning streak. After building a 24-7 halftime lead, the Patriots were outscored 28-10 in the second half.

Here are seven observations from today’s game.

1. Blew it! The Patriots blew this game, plain and simple. Sure, there were some questionable calls by the officials but the Patriots gave this game away in the second half. Josh Allen was Josh Allen but the bigger issue was James Cook and the running game. The Patriots had no answer for Cook in the second half and that was the difference.

2. Henderson’s big day: TreVeyon Henderson had a big day for the Patriots carrying the ball 14 times for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns. He broke two long touchdown runs, one for 52 yards and the other for 65 yards. While that was the bulk of his carries, the two big plays gave the Patriots an early lead and got the Patriots back in the game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. Despite the loss, Henderson has established himself as the Patriots big play weapon.

3. Maye’s Day: Maye had arguably his worst game of the season throwing the ball. He completed 14-of-23 passes for 155 yards and an interception. He did score twice on the ground, but the Bills pass rush threw him off his spot. Maye was hurried throughout the game and was sacked three times in the loss.

4. Clearly missed Spillane and Williams: The Patriots front seven clearly missed Robert Spillane and Milton Williams today. Buffalo rushed for 168 yards today. 107 of those were from James Cook who routinely got into the second level on inside the tackles runs. The Patriots run defense has not been good since Williams got hurt and it was exposed even more today without Spillane in the middle.

5. Diggs quiet: Stefon Diggs only caught 3 passes for 26 yards. He had a monster game against the Bills in October but was a non-factor today. He needs to play big in big games. He has done that in certain games this season but not today. The Patriots need more from him.

6. Officiating was suspect? John Hussey’s crew was notorious for calling a lot of pass interference penalties coming into today and they did that in this game. The Bills capitalized on one late P.I call on Carlton Davis that they scored on to take a 35-31 lead. You don’t usually blame losses on the officials but they did impact today’s game in certain situations.

7. Special teams was not good: The Bills out gained the Patriots 164-97 in the return game. Buffalo routinely had short fields to work with on offense and that got them back in the game. Special teams has been a strength for the Patriots this season but not today. The Bills special teams units were better.
