SANTA CLARA– The Patriots are looking to win their franchise record seventh Super Bowl. It will not be easy as they face a Seahawks team that is talented in all three phases and has been the best team in the NFL arguably this season.
If the Patriots win this game, they would have earned it. Here are five storylines to keep an eye on that will impact the outcome of this game.
Battle in the Trenches: Super Bowl LX will be won along the offensive and defensive lines. Both teams have strong defensive lines but this game will come down to which offensive line holds up and ultimately plays the best. Pound for pound, Seattle has the better offensive line and if they play well, the Seahawks will do what they do on offense. The pressure will be on rookies Will Campbell and Jared Wilson to play well. The Patriots have struggled in pass protection this post season, giving up 15 sacks. It does not get any easier against arguably one of the best fronts in football.
Quarterback turnovers: Both Drake Maye and Sam Darnold have been turnover prone this season. Maye has fumbled the ball 13 times including the playoffs. Darnold led the NFL in turnovers. The onus will be on both quarterbacks to take care of the ball. If they do not, it could be a long afternoon for one of these offenses. Per usual, turnovers will decide the outcome of this game.
Coverage plan for JSN: What are the Patriots doing to do with Jaxon Smith-Njigba? Will they match up Christian Gonzalez on him or will they play the corner to his side where he lines up? The other big question is, do you double him? Again, that will depend on alignment and match up. Either way, Smith-Njigba is a handful and will draw a lot of attention from a coverage standpoint. The Patriots have to limit his effectiveness as best they can.
Coaching edge: The Patriots have the coaching advantage in this game. Vrabel is arguably the best situational coach in the game and he played in three Super Bowls as a player. Factor in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and his Super Bowl coaching experience (Coaching in his 10th Super Bowl) and the Patriots have the coaching advantage of having been there before. Seahawks coach Mike McDonald is mature beyond his years for a coaching standpoint so the stage won’t be too big for him. He will treat this like any other game.
Players health: Drake Maye appears to be healthy and ready to go. His right shoulder does not appear to be an issue. It is Harold Landry and Robert Spillane whose health is up in the air. Both are questionable and could end up being game time decisions. The Patriots need both to play, especially Spillane. He is integral to the Patriots run defense. Both Spillane and Landry plan on playing but they both could truly be game time decisions.
On paper this game has the potential to be an all timer. The Seahawks are favored and rightfully so but the Patriots are more than good enough to win this game. They need to take care of the ball and play their best game of the season. It won’t be easy but if they do, they win.
