The Indianapolis Colts surprised the football world on Saturday when they unexpectedly fired general manager Ryan Grigson.
In a press conference, Colts owner Robert Irsay cited several reasons why he decided to part ways with the embattled general manager. Here’s why I think he fired him.
1. He Was a Jerk: Ryan Grigson is considered one of the biggest jerks in the NFL. People around the league find him to be ornery and difficult to deal with. There is a reason why Grigson and head coach Chuck Pagano attended therapy sessions to work out their issues.
Grigson can be difficult to work with and he is not flexible with others. It is either his way or the highway. All of that finally caught up with him.
2.Open the Door for Peyton Manning: It is no secret that Irsay wants to bring former quarterback Peyton Manning back into the organization in some capacity. I don’t think it’ll be as general manager but don’t be surprised if it is as director of football ops. Manning would have final say over the roster.
3.Roster Composition: The Colts roster is thin in certain areas, particularly along the offensive and defensive lines. I think that finally caught up with Grigson.
I don’t think he put enough pieces around Andrew Luck to give him a chance to compete. The make up of the roster ultimately falls on the general manager.
