Zach Matthews is stepping down as head football coach at Bedford High School. After a successful stint in which he guided the Bulldogs to state title in 2022, 2023 and 2025, Matthews is moving to Virginia to become the new head football coach and assistant athletic director at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia.

In an interview with Ian Steele of WMUR, Matthews talked about his time at Bedford High School, specifically the relationships built during his tenure.

“My time in Bedford has been truly special,” Matthews said. “Three NHIAA Division I state championships, and more importantly, the relationships built within the incredible school and athletic community. I’m especially grateful to the players for their passion, dedication and belief in me which made this journey so meaningful. I also want to thank our coaches, parents, and school administration for their unwavering support throughout the years.”

Matthews will finish out the school year out at Bedford High, where he teaches physical education. He says that the decision to move on ultimately came down to family.

“This next step is driven by my family and the opportunity to continue growing professionally as a coach and an educator.”

Matthews son Bennett, who quarterbacked the Bulldogs to a state title last season is playing lacrosse at Duke. His daughter Olivia plays lacrosse at James Madison.

Matthews won four state titles during his time in the Granite State including one at Goffstown High School.

The Bedford opening should be appealing to coach in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont and it will garner plenty of interest if it is posted.
