Wilmington High School has hired Joe Cavanaugh as the school’s 11th head football coach. Cavanaugh was previously the head football coach at Lowell Catholic for the past two seasons.
A Wilmington High School graduate, Cavanaugh takes over for Craig Turner who guided the Wildcats for eight seasons.
In a statement, Cavanaugh thanked all of those who made it possible for him to return to his alma mater.
“What a ride the last eight years have been. I am thankful to have learned from and coached with some great coaches & athletes. Thank you to Bob Almeida, Mike Barry, Duane Sigsbury and Paul & Bob Sobolewski for giving me a shot. I am extremely excited and humbled to be named the new Head Football Coach at Wilmington High School. Thank you to Mr. Ingram & Mr. Gendron for this opportunity to come back home. We look forward to getting to work.”
Cavanaugh told New England Football Journal it is an honor to be taking over at a program that has given him so much through the years.
“It is truly an honor for me to be able to take over the program in the town that has given me so much and had a huge impact on the person I am today. Not many people can live out their dream, but being the head football coach at Wilmington High School is truly a dream come true for myself and my family. I look forward to instilling the pride and tradition of Wildcat Football in future generations.”
Wilmington is coming off a difficult season so Cavanaugh has some work to do. He has some returning young talent which should help him get the program back on track.
