Where things stand with the BC coaching search

Sources have told NEFJ that both Bill O’Brien and Boston College want to make a deal happen for the program’s head coaching job.

The ball is currently “in BC’s court” according to a source, with terms and money “still being worked through,” as of  Sunday morning.

“Both sides want it,” another source said.

O’Brien has been at the top of BC’s list since the sudden need for a head coaching search began on Wednesday night following Jeff Hafley’s stunning departure. Al Washington was also thought to be high on the list and while it was discussed, Dan Mullen and Brian Flores were never all that realistic. O’Brien has been the priority over the weekend.

Of course, O’Brien is also still technically under contract with Ohio State after agreeing to become the Buckeyes’ OC and QB coach, so that complicates things as well.

Between the ties to St. John’s Prep, getting married at BC, his son pitching for Tufts, the desire to be the BC head coach in years past and other family considerations playing a big factor in the decision, it’s hard to imagine this ultimately doesn’t get done unless money gets in the way.

With NSD on Wednesday and spring ball literally just weeks away, it would behoove everyone involved to get this done in the next 24 hours or so.
