What stood out from Patriots OTAs on Wednesday?

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots had their second OTA practice of the spring on Wednesday afternoon as the defending AFC Champs officially get some football activities going.

This time of year is still considered voluntary, so there was some absences (noted below), but the majority of the team did take part in the light practice that lasted a little over an hour and a half.

Here’s what stood out…

-Absences included Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Gabe Jacas, Harold Landry and Kyle Dixon. Vrabel spoke before practice and emphasized there’s no ill will or hard feelings towards guys that aren’t here. The ‘mandatory’ minicamp is scheduled for June 15-17.

-Drake Maye had an up-and-down day. Missed some throws high, also had a few good ones over the middle, outside and up the seam to Romeo Doubs (who got the very first target from Maye in a team period), Reggie Gilliam and Efton Chism. But, he was also picked off by rookie Karon Prunty, a throw Maye said after practice that he simply “can’t make” in this league, leaving an out behind Kyle Williams.

-Free agent LB KJ Britt had a really impressive PBU over the middle at one point, covering quite a bit of ground to run down a ball intended for rookie tight end Eli Raridon.

-Free agent guard Alijah Vera-Tucker did not participate in team stuff, but did do work off to the side.

-Will Campbell repped extensively on the left side, something Vrabel said would happen before practice.

-With no Gonzalez or Davis, cornerbacks (Kobee Minor, Charles Woods, Prunty, Kindle Vildor…Marcellas Dial was out there, but worked to the side mostly.

-In a half live, half walkthrough field goal period more centered on the line’s technique, Andy Borregales was 3-3 from roughly 32-yards out. No competition for him this offseason, so he’ll have to stay sharp. It’ll be on the staff to come up with creative competitive scenarios for him as well.
