We have waited to confirm this but according to sources, UMass is set to hire East Carolina offensive analyst Shane Montgomery as the school’s new offensive coordinator. Cursive U was the first to have it locally.
Montgomery has called offenses for six different programs including the University of Buffalo most recently. He has also coached at Miami (Ohio), Akron, Charlotte, Youngstown State and James Madison.
He replaces Steve Casula who returned to Michigan two weeks ago as tight ends coach.
Montgomery has experience running a multiple spread offense so his system should fit well with the Minutemen’s personnel. He inherits a playmaking quarterback in Taisun Phommachanh and a talented running back in Kayron Lynch-Adams. Add to that a talented skill group on the outside and he will have plenty to work with.
The Minutemen finished 3-9 last season and are 4-20 in two years under Don Brown. The program is an upswing however and expectations are high for the 2024 season.
We will get our first look at the UMass offense on March 26th when the Minutemen kick off spring practice.
As always, we will be visiting with UMass this spring so we will have full coverage of the new offense and all things UMass Football.
