Top 50 Patriots Prospects: #47: Qwan’tez Stiggers, CB, CFL

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Stiggers is one of the most intriguing prospects in this draft. He never played college football. He played for the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts last season after making the team at a try out. In 16 games last season, he made 55 tackles and picked off five passes. He ended up winning Most Outstanding Rookie for the CFL last season.

Stiggers lost his father in a tragic car accident and thought he had to give up football. His mother signed him up for an arean league tryout which ultimately led to him trying out for the Argos. He made the team and the rest is history.

Here is the scouting report on Qwan’tez Stiggers.

Qwan’tez Stiggers, CB, 5-11 203, Toronto Argonauts

Man to Man Coverage: Stiggers is a fluid atlete who can get his hands on a receiver, flip his hips and carry a route in man coverage. Does a good job of staying in phase on vertical routes and has show he has the quickness to adjust on route breaks and stay in proper body position.

Zone Coverage: Smooth in back pedal. Stiggers stays on top of receivers while reading the quarterback. Does a good job of playing in space and shows good range and an awareness when passing on routes or matching up. Stiggers does need to be disciplined in zone coverage. He has a tendency to jump routes early.

Closing Quickness: Stiggers does a good job recognizing route breaks and planting and driving on the ball. As mentioned earlier, he does have a tendency to jump routes early and he gets caught out of position. Stiggers has shown an ability close vertically if he loses hip position with a receiver.

Key & Diagnose: Stiggers does a good job of reading quarterbacks and playing the ball. He plays with good anticipation, especially in zone coverage. He does need to do a better job of passing routes on in zone coverage.

Lateral Pursuit: Moves well laterally but he is not an elite level athlete who is going to consistently make plays from the back side. He is a better vertical athlete than a lateral athlete.

Tackling: Willing tackler who breaks down, reads the belt buckle and attacks ball carriers. Needs to take better angles and be more consistent but he puts all 200 pounds behind his tackles when he makes contact.

Pass Drop: Clean and smooth in his drops. He is a fluid athete who transitions well in all four directions.

Hands/Ball Skills: Stiggers has plus hands and does a great job of high pointing the ball when it is in the air. He can make constested catch plays whether he is in the slot or outside. His hands are good enough that he can be used as a punt returner as well.

Final Report: I am tapping into the coaching side of me. I love this kid! I love his competitiveness, his ball skills, his instincts and his toughness. Bill Belichick would have been all over Stiggers as either a late round pick or UDFA. I can see Brian Belichick banging the table for him late in day three. He is worthy of picking in either round six or seven, possibly higher. I think he has that much upside.

Draft Range: 5th round-UDFA
