Top 50 Patriots Prospects: #21: Jalyx Hunt, EDGE, Houston Christian

Hunt started at Cornell before transferring to Houston Christian. He has started 21 games the past two seasons. During that span, he has amassed 133 tackles and 13.5 sacks. Hunt is a former safety who put on over 50 pounds to play EDGE. He is an athlete who is just learning how to play the position. Still unrefined and had a lot of work to do in terms of his development.

Here is my scouting report on Jalyx Hunt.

Jalyx Hunt, EDGE, 6-3 252, Houston Christian

Vs. Inside Run:  Hunt does a good job anchoring the edge and slow playing inside running plays, comes down the line and finishes plays from the backside.

Vs. Outside Run: Has a strong upper body. Can extend and lock out on blocks and set an edge. Does a good job of stringing out zone running plays. Needs to get stronger and hold up versus double teams. Gets washed down at times.

Blitz/Pass Rush: Explosive pass rusher who has a quick first step and rushes with good forward lean and bend. Uses his hands well and can get off blocks. Needs a more diverse plan of attack. Relies too much on his speed rush.

Key & Diagnose: Needs to be better in this area. Still walks into counter and trap plays and gets upfield on reverses.

Lateral Pursuit: Terrific athletic who plays fast as way from the ball. Chases from the backside and finishes plays. Takes proper angles.

Tackling: A good tackler but needs to develop in this area. Hunt can fit and finish but needs to take better angles and not always tackle low, especially against bigger ball carriers.

Pass Drop: Hunt is a former safety so he is fluid and comfortable dropping in underneath coverage. Can flip his hips and adjust to receivers in space. Needs to work on better understanding underneath routes.

Pass Coverage/Hands: Hunt has good hands. Catches the ball cleanly and can high point it in contested catch situations.

Final Report:
Hunt has the potential to be a starting edge in the NFL. He is an explosive pass rusher who has the physical tools to rack up double digit sacks. He needs some refinement but he is a great mid-round value. He has met with the Patriots.

Draft Range: 3rd-4th Round
