The Patriots are hosting a home playoff game for the first time in six years tonight. From a match up perspective, it will not be an easy game. The Los Angeles Chargers present their fair share of match up problems.
Despite that, the Patriots are good enough and have enough match ups in this game that could go their way.
It should be a terrific game between two talented teams that are well coached.
Here are the top five matchups to watch.
Khalil Mack vs. Morgan Moses: Moses was sidelined this week with an illness so he may not be 100%. Regardless of his status, this match up against Mack is a tough one. Mack is still an elite level pass rusher who can get after the quarterback and pressure with the best of them. The two veterans have done battle before so this should be a fascinating match up to watch.
Tuli Tuipulotu vs. Will Campbell: Campbell returned last week and shut down Bradley Chubb. He should be able to hold his own against Tuipulotu but he needs to make sure he doesn’t give up the edge and allow him to speed rush him. Tuipulotu wins purely with speed but can blend in power and get past offensive tackles that way.
Quentin Johnston vs. Christian Gonzalez: Gonzalez will be matched against Johnston for most of the night. Do not be surprised however if Gonzalez also ends up on Ladd McConkey and Keenan Allen in certain situations as well. In plus territory however, I expect Gonzalez to play to the boundary side against Johnston, the Chargers love to throw fade balls, back shoulder fades and double moves to him.
Trey Pipkins vs. Harold Landry: Landry should be back this week and he has a favorable match up against Pipkins who tends to play high out of his stance and struggles with speed rushers who can gain an edge on him with their first step. Landry has a distinct advantage in this match up. As long as he is healthy, he should be able to get consistent pressure on Justin Herbert from the front side.
Cam Hart vs. Stefon Diggs: A match up the Patriots should be able to take advantage of. Hart is talented and has good length but he does struggle with twitchy receivers like Diggs who can get in and out of breaks easily. I expect the Patriots to target Diggs a lot in this game. Especially early. Look for Diggs to have a big game against a talented but inconsistent cornerback in Hart.
