Antonio Brown signed a four year, $68 million dollar extension with the Steelers on Monday. The extension makes Brown the highest paid wide receiver of all time.
Brown has been angling for an extension for more than a year now and he finally got it. He will get $19 million guaranteed in the deal.
Statistically, Brown has been the best receiver in the NFL the last three years. Despite putting up big numbers, I think he is grossly overpaid.
While Brown’s regular season numbers have been impressive, his post season numbers leave a lot to be desired. Brown has 44 catches for 705 yards and 2 touchdown catches in nine career playoff games. Those are not great numbers by any stretch of the imagination.
I know it sounds cliche but Brown is not a big game performer, especially in the playoffs. He comes up short when it counts and that is why I think the Steelers overpaid him.
I am not implying that the Steelers should have allowed Brown to get to his free agency and risk losing him. I just think they should have been more rational in paying Brown.
Brown is an integral part of the Steelers offense. He deserves to be paid like a top three receiver but I don’t think he should be the highest paid receiver in the league because he is not the best receiver in the NFL today. That is Julio Jones.
Business might be boomin for Brown but overpaying him is bad for business for the Pittsburgh Steelers. For an organization that takes pride in doing the right things, overpaying the outlandish receiver was truly a head scratcher.
