Seven Points on the Patriots 27-21 loss to the Bills

The Patriots hung tough in Buffalo but ultimately fell short, losing to the Bills 27-21. Three early turn overs were the difference as the Patriots fell behind early and could not catch up.

Here are seven points from Sunday’s loss.

1. Early turnovers the difference: Three Bailey Zappe first half interceptions and a Pharaoh Brown fumble led to three Buffalo scores and proved to be the difference in the game. You could argue that two of the interceptions were not Zappe’s fault, but in the end they were costly turnovers that swung the momentum to Buffalo’s side and the Bills were able to hang on and win as a result.

2. Reagor’s return: Jalen Reagor opened the game with a 98 yard kickoff return to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead to open the game. Unfortunately, the lead did not last as the Patriots went on to turn the ball over three times in four possessions but Reagor’s return was impressive nonetheless and it proved that he could potentially have a role moving forward.

3. Defense does it’s part once again: The defense once again played well enough for the Patriots to win. They were put in a no win situation with all of the sudden changes but despite that, they did enough to hold Buffalo to a couple of field goals while the offense figured things out.

4. Pop sets record: DeMario Douglas broke the Patriots record for a rookie under Bill Belichick for receptions and yards with his 3 catches for 31 yards. His stat line wasn’t very impressive but he made a nice play on a screen pass in the second half where you saw his shiftiness and explosiveness. Douglas continues to be one of the few bright spots offensively.

5. Ryland misses two more: Chad Ryland missed a 47 yard field and then missed another field goal that was ultimately wiped away by a delay of game penalty. Ryland has now missed ten field goals on the season.

6. Zappe banged up? Bailey Zappe was seen limping after the game. He was also limping around during the week which begs the question. Is he hurt? No one knows for sure. But one has to wonder if the second year quarterback is playing through an injury. I guess we won’t find out until after Sunday.

7. Brown situation: Trent Brown was a healthy scratch for the game. There have been issues with him regarding his effort recently and there is speculation that he is not pushing himself returning from injury. Regardless of what the situation is, Brown is unhappy and I would expect him to play elsewhere next season.
