According to Aaron Wilson of Houston KPRC2, the Patriots will have a new offensive line coach this season as Cleveland Browns assistant offensive line coach Scott Peters is expected to be named the team’s new offensive line coach.
Peters played in the NFL for seven seasons, playing for five different franchises. He was drafted in 2002. For the past four seasons, he has coached in Cleveland under former Browns offensive line coach Bill Callahan who has since left the Browns to coach for his son Brian in Tennessee.
Peters replaces Adrian Klemm after one season. Klemm had a tough return to New England, spending most of last season away from the team due to health issues.
Peters has a big job ahead of him as the Patriots offensive line has been among the worst in the NFL the past two seasons. Add to that the fact that both starting tackles, Trent Brown and Michael Onwenu are free agents and the job of turning this unit around becomes even more daunting.
Callahan and Peters have done an exceptional job with Cleveland’s offensive line in recent years. During Peters time coaching the line, right tackle Jack Conklin earned first team AP All-Pro honors while guards Joel Bitonio and Wyatt Teller earned second team honors.
Peters is yet another Alex Van Pelt hire as Jerod Mayo has allowed him to build his own staff, something that Bill Belichick did not allow Bill O’Brien to do last off-season.
As a side note, Peters has an extensive martial arts background. He won two Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world championships in submission grappling. Perhaps he can use some of those techniques to train Patriots offensive lineman.
