Scott Boyle steps down at Lowell

Scott Boyle’s second act at Lowell High School has come to an abrupt and unexpected end. Just two years after returning to lead his alma mater, Boyle resigned as the Head Football Coach of the Red Raiders, a move confirmed by Athletic Director Scott Ouellet following a Wednesday morning workout session where the coach shared the news with his players.

While Ouellet noted that he and Boyle had held multiple discussions regarding the program’s future over the past month, the specific reasoning behind the departure remains private.

Boyle has not yet commented publicly, and Ouellet declined to speak on his behalf, though the Athletic Director’s official statement made his personal disappointment clear. Ouellet praised Boyle as a “difference maker” and a coach who gave everything to the athletes, noting that his presence on the sidelines will be deeply missed by the school community.

The resignation marks the end of a remarkably successful “resuscitation” of Lowell football. When Boyle took over in January 2024, he inherited a program struggling for momentum. He immediately stabilized the team, leading them to a 4-7 record in his first year before orchestrating a dominant 9-2 campaign in 2025. The season was defined by a historic postseason upset over Methuen, which propelled the Red Raiders to the state quarterfinals. That victory also earned Boyle the New England Patriots Coach of the Week honors, bringing a $1,000 donation to the program from the Patriots Charitable Foundation.

Boyle’s departure leaves a significant void in the record books as well as the locker room. Between his initial tenure from 1997 to 2006 and his recent two-year stint, he amassed 81 career victories.

Although he is stepping down from the helm, Boyle is not severing ties with his players entirely; he is expected to continue assisting juniors and seniors with the college recruiting process.

The focus now shifts to the future of the Red Raiders. Ouellet and Head of School Mike Fiato are set to meet immediately to outline a transition plan and begin the search for a successor. They face the difficult task of finding a leader capable of maintaining the high standards and competitive culture Boyle re-established in such a short period of time.
