We got a chance to interview former Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia on Saturday at the Big New England Football Clinic in Newport, Rhode Island.
We touched on a variety of topics including the current state of the Patriots. Scarnecchia was complementary and thankful for his time with the organization and working for Bill Belichick. He also praised new coach Jerod Mayo, calling him a hard worker.
Perhaps the most interesting answer Scarnecchia said was that he still believed in Mac Jones.
“They have to get more out of the quarterback position. Look it, I believe in Mac Jones. I just believe in him. Scarnecchia adds: “I think he has come under a lot of criticism. I think there is a lot more there. Closer to what we saw in the beginning.”
Scarnecchia reinforced his strong feelings regarding Jones.
“I don’t care what people think or if they criticize me for what I said.” Scarnecchia continued: “If he stays in New England, I wish him great success. If he goes to another team, I wish him great success. And I don’t even know the guy. I met him one time in the weight room.”
It is hard to argue with Scarnecchia given his pedigree but it hard to see the Patriots running it back with Jones. It is highly unlikely.
Both the team and Jones are ready to move on and if you believe a report in the Boston Herald this week, Jones has enough value to fetch a fifth or sixth round pick in a trade.
The Patriots are going to trade Jones, it is only a matter of time. Regardless of where ends up, he has a supporter in the legendary former Patriots offensive coach.
