Former Patriots and Chargers safety Rodney Harrison is on the doorstep of immortality as it was announced last night that he is one of 15 modern day finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Harrison played with the San Diego Chargers from 1994 to 2002 and with the Patriots from 2003 to 2008.
Harrison won two Super Bowls with the Patriots and is on the Patriots and Chargers 50th Anniversary teams. He is a two time All-Pro, two time Pro Bowler and he is a member of the Patriots Hall of Fame.
Harrison racked up 34 interceptions in his career, 30.5 sacks and 1,206 tackles. He forced 15 fumbles and recovered 9 of them.
Harrison has waited for a while to get to this point and now that he is here, he should get in. This year’s finalist group has some big names, especially at wide receiver but defensively, Harrison’s resume stacks up with Jared Allen, Eric Allen and the other defensive finalists.
For a long time, I had my reservations about Harrison getting in. However, as time has gone on, I have changed my opinion. He deserves to get in. His numbers are good enough and his impact on the game was immense. He revolutionized the safety position.
Rodney Harrison deserves to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Now is his time. Hopefully voters do the right thing and vote him in.
