LJ Spinnato has things rolling pretty well over at Choate.
This past fall, Choate went 9-0, which included a NEPSAC bowl win over Phillips Exeter. Under Spinnato, Choate has been one of the top programs in New England, sending players to every level of college football.
We spoke with Spinnato this week to get the rundown on some of his top players as the offseason heats up.
One player who is getting a lot of attention is offensive tackle Will Black. The 6-foot-7, 295-pound player is a Notre Dame commit.
“He is the strongest, most athletic, 6-foot-7,” Spinnato said. “He holds that weight really, really well. Super agile, smart, hard-working, high, high character kid. He’s pretty special. Pretty special talent. . . . They envision him as similar to the tackle they had that is going in the first round (Joe Alt).”
Another offensive lineman to watch is center/guard Dylan Clifton (6-3, 290).
“He’s probably the strongest player I’ve ever coached. He’s physical. He’s very, very smart. Gets into people, finishes blocks. Just does a great job. Knows the game really well for a kid who’s his age. Works his ass off and competes. Has a great attitude,” Spinnato said.
Kicker Marc Cappuccitti-Gutierrez (6-2, 190) is a D1 prospect who can kick, do kickoffs, and punt.
Cornerback Ezra Fearon (6-3, 175) is another top prospect for Choate.
“He’s picking up a ton of FCS offers. He’s got the service academies. Awesome kid,” Spinnato said. “Length, athletic, he understands angles really well in his man coverage. We played cover zero the whole season sitting in the boundary. Great attitude and tons of upside. Surprisingly physical for how skinny he is. Supports the run really, really well. He’s an excellent prospect.”
Carson Hill is a 6-0, 180 wide receiver who is getting attention.
“Great route runner,” Spinnato said. “Finds a way to create separation in all situations. Great ball skills. He’s one of the best yards after catch guys in the league. Great hips, very smooth.”
Another player to watch is Konstantine Paschos, a 6-7, 230-pound defensive end.
“Super fast, athletic, great off the ball,” Spinnato said. “Obviously length. He can bend. Great attitude, super-smart kid. High, high character kids, too.”
Carter Vaughn is a 6-0, 205 outside linebacker.
“He is the first linebacker picked when you’re talking about all-league selections,” Spinnato said. “He’s physical, he’s nasty. He’s a real throwback football player. Every tackle he explodes through contact. He’s good in coverage. A throwback, but plays well in the modern game. Plays well in space. Tackles well in space. Even open-field tackles are physical blows. Creates great angles, pursues the ball really well.”
Cornerback and wide receiver Jeremiah Washington is 5-9, 170.
“Elite speed. He’s a sub-11 100 meter. I think he ran a 10.91 last spring. Looking to improve upon that this year in track,” Spinnato said. “Very, very good hips. He plays the ball really well in the air. Just a lockdown corner for us. Big-play potential for us on offense and the return game.”
Matisse Brosseau is a 6-3, 235 defensive end and outside linebacker.
“He’s going to be a problem,” Spinnato said. “He’s an explosive kid. Great with his hands. He went from small-ball in Canada to a different league here, but I thought made the transition quite well. He’s just working his ass off. I think he’s going to have a great year next year.”
Tight end Jack Carr is a 6-4, 215 player to keep an eye on.
“He’s poised to have a big senior year,” Spinnato said.
Jordan Gonzalez is a 6-2, 220-pound linebacker with a 10-foot broad.
“We’re expecting him to play with a renewed confidence (after bouncing back from a knee injury) this fall coming up,” Spinnato said. “He flies. He’s an explosive athlete.”
As far as Class of 2026 players go, the biggest is Will Tellers, a 6-4, 270 guard and tackle.
“He’s a second-team all-league kid as a sophomore,” Spinnato said. “He came as a freshman, developed a ton his freshman year. Started this year and just balled. He was really good this year. Looking for him to take another step forward for next year. He’s one of, if not, the top five linemen out there. Maybe not prospects because he’s not 6-7, but he’ll be a Division 1 athlete. There’s no doubt about that.”
Two other defenders to watch are linebacker Jay Diaz (5-10, 210) and safety Kayden Soares (5-10, 171).
“They’re just good football players,” Spinnato said. “They can play tailback. They do all special teams.”
Tanner Raymond is a tight end and outside linebacker at 6-3, 210.
“He’s going to take a huge jump,” Spinnato said.
Defensive end Cole Siegel is a 6-2, 220 player for whom “we have high expectations for,” Spinnato said. “We are expecting a huge jump in his game.”
Justin Edwards (nose guard, 5-11, 250) and Graham Edwards (center, 6-2, 240) are two others to watch.
“Those guys are stepping into starting roles that rotated last year,” Spinnato said.
