While Xaverian usually has stellar offensive line play, it does not always have the big, FBS-caliber hulking bodies up front.
Lately, though, that has begun to change.
Senior Jack Funke checks in at 6-foot-6, 290 pounds, and will continue his career at Boston College. We spoke Friday night with Xaverian coach Al Fornaro about Funke and some other Hawks prospects for this week’s recruiting roundup.
Starting with Funke, Fornaro said the big tackle brought to the table a high level of leadership along with his play.
“His influence from a leadership standpoint was one of the better things he did for us,” Fornaro said.
As for Funke’s preparation for BC, Fornaro said, “I don’t know if he can work any harder.”
It will be fun to see Funke’s development at BC, as Fornaro said his lineman will be “315 by accident.”
Another 6-6, 290 lineman that is generating serious interest is Jon Mould. What is interesting about Mould is he is still relatively new to the sport. He came to Xaverian as a baseball and hockey player who has only played football for three years.
A high academic profile, Mould has been offered by every Ivy League school outside of Cornell.
“Harvard and Princeton, they want to kidnap him,” Fornaro said. “They want him now.”
Pitt, along with BC, are two FBS teams to watch with Mould, who has a lot going for him. He’s a very good athlete who obviously has excellent size.
Fornaro is asking Mould what he asks of many of his prospects: “If you couldn’t play football tomorrow, where would you like to go?”
Of the other seniors, one to keep an eye on is wide receiver Carlo Crocetti. He will post-grad at Loomis Chaffee. “He’s going to make someone very happy,” Fornaro said.
Running back Joe Kelcourse is undecided. Defensive end Aiden Lovelace is off to the University of Rochester. Kicker Oliver Weddleton is going to Trinity. Quarterback Jake Gilbert is going to Fairfield for lacrosse.
Of the juniors, running back Michael Oates is off to UConn for baseball but is a good athlete who “is catching the ball better than he ever had,” according to Fornaro. Linebacker/fullback Cole Jette is a NESCAC guy of whom Wesleyan has expressed some interest.
Defensive end Matt DeFeo is a high academic kid who has grades good enough for the Ivy League. Right now he is about 6-3, 245.
Offensive lineman Cole Canty is 6-2, 285, and an athletic presence on the interior line. “I feel he’s an FCS guy,” Fornaro said.
Linebacker/fullback Jeffrey Prophete is going to get some work as a running back this season, and Fornaro likes him as an FCS/Div. 2 prospect.
Anthony Busa is a three-year starter at safety and wide receiver, and is an intriguing prospect at 6-0, 190.
Tight end Jack Tubman at 6-3, 220 is a NESCAC recruit.
There are some sophomores to keep an eye on. Wide receiver/defensive back Jonathan Monteiro is 6-3, 175 and having a great offseason, according to Fornaro.
Wide receiver/corner Charlie Comella is a good player with an excellent knowledge of the game.
Caleb Brown has fought through some injuries but has potential as a wide receiver and defensive back.
Andrew Duffault is an offensive lineman who is one of the better long snappers you will find, which could open some doors for him.
You can’t beat Everett, CM, Central Catholic, and Springfield Central with quarterbacks who go play lacrosse in college, not happening!
