It was business as usual for Buckingham, Browne & Nichols this year.
The Knights had a strong year in the Independent School League, made it to a NEPSAC Bowl game, and sent a lot of players off to college to continue their careers.
That has been the routine for BB&N for years now, and it does not look to change anytime soon.
We caught up with BB&N coach Mike Willey to get the lowdown on some of his top prospects and more.
Leading the way is senior Tyler Martin, the linebacker who will be heading off to the University of Arizona.
“Yeah, I mean, that was a long road for Tyler, starting in the eighth grade,” Willey said of Martin, who was offered by Michigan in the eighth grade. “Basically, coach (Don) Brown was a big part of when Tyler considered Arizona (Brown was the defensive coordinator at Arizona before he went to UMass as the head coach). Tyler really liked Arizona and fell in love with the place. He loved (Arizona head) coach Jedd Fisch. (Fisch is) a tremendous guy, great guy. When coach Brown took the UMass job, plenty of people were asking what Tyler’s going to do. He was committed to Arizona at that point. He was done with looking at different options.”
Another FBS player from that class is wide receiver/defensive back Ty Harding. Harding has excellent speed and can play on either side of the ball in college. He was offered relatively late in the game by UMass, and Brown extended one to Harding in one of his first local offers when Brown came to UMass.
“All I saw him do was make play after play after play,” Willey said. “I think he’s going to be a great college football player.”
Quarterback Shane Hanafin has some options. He may take a PWO at Boston College, and he may go to Merrimack.
Offensive lineman Nick Ciaffoni is going to go to Rutgers. Defensive back Thomas Porell will go to Notre Dame on a lacrosse scholarship. Offensive lineman Thaddeus Foote will play at Middlebury. Declan Pflaumer will play at Assumption. Defensive end Thomas Sheft will play at Hamilton. Center James Staknis will play at Lake Forest (Ill.).
The junior class is also loaded at BB&N. Wide receiver Ronan Hanafin has offers from just about everyone. Among others, there are ones from Ohio State, Nebraska, Boston College, Notre Dame, UMass, UConn, PEnn State, and Michigan. He is still at. the beginning of his recruitment.
Running back/wide receiver/defensive back Isaiah Kacyvenski is a high academic performer and will have plenty of Ivy League schools after him. Isaiah Ohuabunwa is 6-3, 340, and his size will have colleges after him.
Two linebackers, Jake Berglund and Leo Sarzana, are bother getting started in the process. Jay Kulkarni, a defensive end, is another high academic who will have Ivy League schools interested. Willey expects Tyler Robbins, a wide receiver, defensive back, and linebacker, to start coming on recruiting-wise soon.
Sophomore offensive lineman Brian Brennan is going to get recruited at 6-3, 260. Brett Elliott, a tight end, has an offer from UMass, and that won’t be his last one. Elliott stands 6-6. Jack Kelley, a wide receiver/outside linebacker, and Nick Matosic, a defensive lineman, will both get recruited.
Only a freshman, running back Bo MacCormack has opened a lot of eyes already. He rushed for 1,200 yards in eight games this fall.
