Recruiting: Preston Zinter announces he is committing to Notre Dame

Central Catholic tight end and defensive end Preston Zinter announced this morning that he is committing to Notre Dame.

The four star junior picked the Irish over Michigan, Boston College Ohio State, Auburn and several other high profile programs.

It was speculated that Zinter might join his brother Zak at Michigan but in the end, he opted to forge his own path and go to Notre Dame.

Zinter has garnered a lot of attention for his offensive play in high school but he projects as a defensive player at the college level. He said as much in an interview with 24/7 Sports.
Zinter emphasized that he can see himself playing all three linebacker spots and that the Irish coaching staff really likes his athleticism.

“The last trip I made out there for their junior day (last month), I got to sit down with coach (Nick) Lezynski, kind of the overseer of linebackers,” the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Zinter said. “He really showed me how I would fit into their scheme, and how he could see me playing any of the three linebacker positions they have, and once I get there, how I’ll develop and which one I feel the most comfortable playing.”

“They love my athleticism to play any of the three — my height, my weight. They really need to see how I develop and which one I will perform and play the best.”

In the end, he picked Notre Dame because he liked what Coach Freeman is building in South Bend.

“Coach Freeman is building something very special,” he said. “I want to be involved with something special with him and bring home that national championship. Notre Dame is just a brotherhood and all the guys are super relatable.”

Zinter is the second Massachusetts player to commit to Notre Dame in the last two years. He follows Ty Chan of Lawrence Academy who is the in the Class of 2022.
