It has been a great two weeks for Taunton.
The Tigers earned two big wins back to back, beating North Attleboro, 13-7, two Thursdays ago. The Tigers then took down Milton, 21-14, this weekend.
The Tigers now find themselves at 4-3 overall, and face Attleboro next week. Taunton should be a factor in the D1 state playoffs.
We spoke to Taunton coach Brad Sidwell about his team, and where it stands near the end of the regular season.
This is an edited version of that conversation.
Adam Kurkjian: Beating North Attleboro any year is a big deal in the Hockomock League. Then, beating Milton is obviously a big deal, too. How do those wins stack up with the ones you’ve had since you’ve been at Taunton?
BS: They were certainly important, and they feel a little bigger. But, over the course of a season, we thought we could win both those games. Our kids thought going in, and being able to execute was a good feeling for them, and something we hope we can build on.
AK: Who are some of the guys who so far have led you this year?
BS: We’ve had a couple guys: Jose Touron, Ethan Harris, Ryan Keenan. Those have been obvious leaders for us. But we’ve had a bunch of guys improve over the course of the season. That’s nice to see.
AK: Last two offseasons, guys in the Hockomock have talked about your skill group being as good as anyone else’s in the league. Touron is one of those players. Did you really like your skill group coming into this season?
BS: Absolutely. I failed to mention Dmitrius Shearrion. He’s one of the fastest kids in the state in track events. He’s come along well, too. He has great leadership. He plays both ways for us, and added an extra fast skill guy that helps. You know where I’m going with that. It’s nice to have those guys, but you have to have five guys up front, too, that can handle the physicalness of the Hockomock League and Division 1. That’s something we’re trying to develop. You can have great skill, but that’s only half your offense. You need other guys to help do that. We were inexperienced, but have gained some experience. Hopefully they can continue to get better, with a couple of wins under their belt, to have the confidence to do that.
AK: You know what it takes to win in this league. You’ve been in it for a long time. Where’s the greatest amount of growth you’ve seen from this program in these last few years?
BS: I would just say overall depth. We have 120 kids in the program. Now, that number sometimes decreases over the course of a season with attrition. Our sub-varsity teams are playing well and getting coached up. We have kids behind our skill kids that are juniors that are good players. They’re just waiting their turn. When you look at it at a big picture idea, that’s where we feel that’s gotten better.
AK: I feel like sometimes when a school has a really good, state-championship level team in one sport, it kind of helps everybody else. Taunton has gotten so good in a lot of sports. The baseball team is winning state titles now. Does that have any positive effect on you, or is that completely separate?
BS: It does, absolutely. We preach to our kids to play multi sports. We had a bunch of those kids off last year’s senior class, and the previous classes before that played baseball and football. We have a bunch of wrestlers. You name it, we’ve got them. Those guys have had very good success. Members of our football staff are also members of the baseball coaching staff. Coach (Blair) Bourque and I see each other every day, and talk about it. I would say, yes, that is something that I think about, for sure.
AK: Playoffs are right around the corner. What do you think you guys got to do to make a run this year?
BS: I don’t even think about that, to be honest with you. I look at the power ratings when they come out. But, just really trying to improve every single day. It’s kind of old coach talk, but for us, that’s important. We’ve got to go out, have a good practice, good practice week, before we think about any of that. Two of our three losses have been in the last drive of the game. Those are things you preach to your teams, that it’s only a couple plays, and you got to make sure you’re timing up when you’re making your best ones. We would gladly be in the playoffs and whoever we have to play, but we’re just trying to get better each day.
