Portland names former Cape Elizabeth coach Sean Green as their new coach

Portland High School has a new coach. Former Cape Elizabeth coach Sean Green has been named the new coach of the Bulldogs. The 31 year old Green takes over for Jason McLeod who resigned in November. McLeod went 19-12 in three seasons. That included an 8-4 record last season and a trip to the Class B championship game.

Green has Massachusetts ties. He played his college ball at Bridgewater State and he coached at Littleton High School. He was the offensive coordinator at the school when the team averaged over 50 points per game and capped off a 13-0 season, with a state championship victory at Gillette Stadium.

Green moved to Maine and started coaching at Deering High School in 2017. He was then head coach of the Portland Middle School Football Team in 2018. In the winter of 2019, he was hired as the head football coach at Cape Elizabeth High School. where he led the Capers to a Class C state title in 2021. It was the first state title in school history.

In a statement released by the school, Green says he always encourages his football players to be leaders in their classroom, hallways, community, and on the field. Communication, sportsmanship, and team always come first, and his players strive for personal, educational, and athletic excellence.

In the statement, Lance Johnson, Portland High School’s co-curricular director, said the district is excited about adding Green to the coaching staff. “We are excited to bring a coach to Portland High that is connected to our community and is committed to building character, leadership, and integrity into our athletic program. Coach Green has an ability to attract coaches and student-athletes to his program. He brings unique energy, leadership and a love for the game of  football with him to Portland High.”

Portland is moving up to Class A next season. The district is the largest in Maine with over 6,500 students. Needless to say, the potential is there to build something special and Green may just be the guy to do it.
