FOXBOROUGH – Rain forced the Patriots’ eighth training camp practice indoors on Monday morning.

It may have been a blessing in disguise too.

The tightness inside of the Winn Waste Innovations Field House – combined with no fans – made for the most intimate and competitive practice of the summer so far. Physical (but nothing crazy) and a ton of jaw-jacking between the offense and defense.

Usually, we’d just sort of pick out what stood out for the two hours, but there was so much good stuff that I ended up with three pages of notes. So, let’s through everything…

Absences/injuries 

The PUP guys, Caedan Wallace, Carlton Davis III and Kyle Williams. Williams had left practice Saturday, but returned. We also saw him late, but he didn’t participate. AJ Brown apparently dislocated his thumb. I didn’t see it, but he was shaking his hand at one point. Stayed the remainder of practice and made some plays after.

Early 1-on-1’s

All down by the 15-yard line. Writing these quickly in real time, so apologies for lack of exact detail on some of the plays, I believe the majority of them were from Maye, but a few might have been from Tommy DeVito too…

-First snap, AJ Brown reels in a one-handed catch at the back left pylon against Christian Gonzalez. He initially tipped it up to himself with one hand, grabbed it and got both feet down. Just sick.

-PBU for Charles Woods against Romeo Doubs.

-Awesome toe-tap grab for Pop Douglas in the left side of the end zone against Woods.

-Mack Hollins TD vs. Kindle Vildor. (More on Mack in a bit…)

-Kayshon Boutte drops a ball against Gonzalez in the back left corner.

-Hunter Henry TD vs. Craig Woodson. Henry fought through an early hold near the goal line.

-PBU for Kobee Minor against Lan Larison.

-Kyle Dixon TD grab along the back line vs. Woods.

-Slant TD for Nick DeGennaro (missed who it was against).

-PBU by Brandon Crossley against Cam Dorner.

-Efton Chism TD against Marcellas Dial Jr.

-Doubs TD vs. Minor.

-Gonzalez locks up Boutte in the end zone and comes up with an easy pick.

-Back line TD for Hollins against Vildor, pretty wide open.

-Doubs drops a great ball (from I think DeVito) for a TD against Channing Canada.

-Marcus Jones locks up Pop Douglas, drawing quite a bit of chirping from Gonzalez in a sign of things to come.

7-on-7 Red Zone

Maye – TD on a post to Henry. PBU for Chad Muma against Rhamondre Stevenson on an angle. Short completion to Pop. Coverage incompletion (Maye took two pumps looking for a swing to Henderson before turfing it).

DeVito – Short completion to Boutte. PBU for Kahlil Jacobs underneath against Hollins. Hitch to Hollins vs. Vildor.

Maye – Sick grab by Brown in the back of the end zone vs. Gonzalez. The chirping continues. Incompletion to the back right pylon for Henry. PBU by Canada vs. Brown (seriously). Dime to the back left corner for a TD to Pop against Woodson.

DeVito – Hitch over the middle to Chism. Back right corner TD to Boutte (dime, didn’t get who it was against). TD for Eli Raridon vs. Canada.

Full-ish field team period with noise

Since the field inside the bubble is only like 60-70 yards, it wasn’t technically ‘full field’ drives, but the Pats did work on third-&-short with noise. Instead of music, the team used sirens blasting from the speakers before snapping the ball…

Maye – Slant to Brown. Run for Stevenson (X2) third-&-short picked up. Completion to Doubs.

DeVito – Short completion to Chism. Completion to Hollins. Lan Larison picks up a first down on third-&-short. QB scramble due to coverage.

Maye – Short to Henry. Doubs sits down in zone and makes a catch in the middle of the field. Offside D, but they blow up a run on the next snap to stuff third down. Brown drops a deep ball against Karon Prunty.

DeVito – Muma blows up a run on the edge. He was a factor a bunch on Monday…Larison with a very hard run. First down on a completion to Chism for a first down. Boutte drops a quick pass.

Morton – Third team guys got a bit of an extended run here…Complete to Dixon on the right sideline. Hard run Jam Miller. Hitch to Dixon. Hard run by Myles Montgomery. Lengthy jump ball tussle between DeGennaro and Prunty on a shot down the right side. DeGennaro ultimately came out of a pile with it, but the defense seemed to think it was an INT. Great competitiveness either way…hard run by Montgomery before the defense swarms to stuff a run outside. Slant to Kobe Prentice…Quintayvious Hutchins had a sick inside move to force Morton to roll out to his right here. Got to shout out the BC guys when I can.

Red Zone

Maye – Hard run by TreVeyon Henderson. Robert Spillane blows up a run. Crosser to Henry with Kevin Byard in coverage. PBU for Charles Woods against Doubs.

DeVito – LB Xavier Holmes shuts down a run outside. Hard run by Larison. TD on a slant to Hollins (dart). Back left corner TD for Chism, great job twisting his body to high-point it and make the grab. Great ball too.

Maye – Run Stevenson. Screen. Incompletion on a screen for Henderson (pressure forces high throw). TD on a slant to Brown. Should be an impossible play for teams to stop this season.

DeVito – Completion to Hollins outside. Terrell Jenning gets stuffed on a run. TD in the back right corner to Boutte over a defender (missed who). PBU for Canada on a slant against Boutte.

Final team period, ball at the 10…

Maye – TD run for Stevenson (huge hole). Maye TD run up the middle. Throw away to the back right corner. Dell Pettus and Spillane combine for a thumping run stuff.

DeVito – Short run by Jennings. TD to Mack Hollins in the back left corner. The celebration was…something. We’ll leave it at that. Love how much emotion he plays with. Also one of the few times Gabe Jacas got in on some live action and his burst is incredible on every single rep, whether going inside or outside, as long as he stays healthy he’s going to be a factor sooner than later…PBU for Pettus against Chism. Doubs drops a TD.

Maye – Short completion to Henderson, no gain. Hollins drops a TD in the back left corner against Minor. That emotion came out on the other side this time. Guy just wants to make a play every damn time…PBU by Gonzalez against Brown on a slant with jaw-jacking. Brown immediately came back and caught just about the same ball against him on the next play, returning returning chirps.

DeVito – Fade TD to Hollins in the back left corner against Vildor. Sick back-shoulder throw and grab for Boutte in the end zone against Prunty.

Kick off return work

We also got to see a little bit of live (ish) kick off return and man, Chism and Prentice can both fly. Looking forward to seeing the real thing in joint practices and preseason games.

Next up

Pats are back out behind Gillette Stadium at 10:15 on Tuesday morning. Should be another padded practice before a closed walkthrough on Wednesday. Gates for the public open at 9:15.
