Patriots: When it comes to receivers at the Combine, the Patriots are just doing their due diligence

The Patriots have been busy this week at the combine meeting with wide receivers. They have met with Treylon Burks, Jamison Williams, John Metchie and Slade Bolden among others.

Burks described his meeting with the Patriots as “intense.” All the receiver talk coming out of Indianapolis has Patriots fans excited. Allow me to burst your bubble. The Patriots meeting with all of these receivers is them doing their due diligence.

It does not mean they plan on taking a receiver with their first round pick. Could they? Sure. Keep in mind however, we are talking about Bill Belichick here. He is the most unpredictable executive in the NFL. For all we know, he could draft a player at another position with his first round pick or dare I say, he could trade down. You just never know with him.

Belichick addressed the receiver position last off-season signing Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne in free agency. Agholor was a disappointment but Bourne had a career year. Jakobi Meyers was the team’s leading receiver but he is a restricted free agent. N’Keal Harry has been a bust and he continues the Belichick tradition of not drafting well at the position.

Could the Patriots use another receiver? Of course they can. It is the main reason they are in the running for Calvin Ridley. If they do not trade for Ridley, they could add another receiver in the draft but I would be surprised if Belichick took one in the first round with so many other needs (cornerback, linebacker.)

If a player like Burks is on the board when the 21st pick comes up and he is the best player available, I could see Belichick taking him.

The idea however that he is going to draft Burks because he wants a mea culpa for drafting Harry in 2019 and not Deebo Samuel (Burks has been compared to Samuel) is silly.

Whether you like it or not, Belichick has always done what he thinks is best for the team. He will never do what the fans or the media thinks he should do. That is not who he is. In fact, most coaches and executives around the league are like that.

So while you may think he is drafting a receiver in the first round because the team has talked to a handful of them at the Combine, you would be wrong. The Patriots are just doing their due diligence. Just like they would with any other position. It is what they do as part of the evaluation process.

So if they don’t go receiver in the first round, don’t get mad. Just remember, “In Bill We Trust.” You have to trust he will do what is right for the team. Whether you like it or not.
