The Patriots re-signed long time time back up Brian Hoyer on Monday to a one year deal. The Hoyer signing came on the heels of the team signing guard Alex Redmond earlier in the day. Redmond has starting experience and would provide an experienced option off the bench. Enough about him however. Back to Hoyer.
So what does the Hoyer signing mean? I don’t know? I honestly cannot tell you. It literally makes no sense to bring Hoyer back.
It is not like Hoyer is insurance in the event that Cam Newton struggles. Even if Newton gets off to a slow start in training camp or the pre-season for that matter, are the Patriots going to cut him? Highly unlikely because they would have to eat a $5 million dollar cap hit.
Then there is the unfortunate case of Jarrett Stidham. A guy who by all accounts is liked by his teammates, works hard and wants to be the “guy.” The problem is, the organization doesn’t see him as the “guy” so you’d have to think that he could be on the bubble now.
If that is the case, then that would mean the Patriots don’t view Mac Jones as the back up and they don’t want to rush him into that role let alone being the starter. Remember, Tom Brady didn’t start out as Drew Bledsoe’s back up either. It was Damon Huard who Brady eventually supplanted.
We can all agree that Jones is the future at the quarterback position. Maybe Hoyer is just a camp arm/mentor for Stidham and Jones. Or maybe, just maybe, he will make the team and Newton and or Stidham will be the odd man out.
It is all speculation right now but either way, the Patriots have added more depth to a roster that is much improved. As the old adage goes in football. You can never have enough depth.
