In a surprising move on the eve of their game in Miami, the Patriots have traded wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk to the New Orleans Saints. The second-year player, who was a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was on the season-ending injured reserve list after suffering a shoulder injury during the preseason.
The Patriots will receive a 2027 sixth-round draft pick in exchange for Polk and a 2028 seventh-round pick. For the Patriots, the trade signals a willingness to move on from a recent high draft pick and gain some future draft capital.
With Polk out for the entire 2025 season, the team opted to get what they could for a player who, while showing flashes as a rookie, had an underwhelming first season with just 12 catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
For the Saints, this is a low-risk, high-reward move. They are essentially trading a future sixth-round pick for a player who was selected in the second round just a year ago. While Polk will not be able to contribute this season, the Saints are betting that he can make a full recovery and become a productive player in their offense in 2026. The move gives Polk a fresh start and an opportunity to reset his career in a new system.
This trade is the latest in a series of moves by the Patriots as they continue to reshape their roster. The decision to part with Polk, a player they invested a significant draft pick in, highlights the team’s focus on building for the future and moving on from players who may not fit into their long-term plans.
