The Patriots are reshaping their defensive coaching staff following the season ending loss to the Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.
According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the organization is moving defensive coordinator Terrell Williams into a high-ranking role within the staff. This transition comes after the news recently that Williams is now cancer-free, having battled prostate cancer throughout the 2025 season.
While Williams remained a constant source of motivation for the unit, his health required him to step back from the daily rigors of the coordinator position, and this new role allows him to maintain a major influence on the team’s direction while prioritizing his continued recovery.
With Williams transitioning to a new role, the Patriots have officially opened the search for a new defensive coordinator. Inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr has immediately emerged as a top candidate for the vacancy after a stellar performance as the team’s de facto coordinator this past year.
Kuhr took over the play-calling duties during Williams’ absence and was a primary architect of a defense that fueled the team’s Super Bowl run. His ability to maintain the unit’s elite production under difficult circumstances has earned him significant respect within the building, making him the internal favorite to take the reins permanently as the team looks to build on its recent postseason success.
There is no word if Mike Vrabel is going to interview other candidates and on or outside of the staff.
