Patriots: The Patriots coaching staff has plenty to fix during the bye week

The Ravens exposed many of the Patriots flaws in their 37-20 win.

Bill Belichick and his coaching staff have a lot to work on during the up coming bye week. Coming off of a 37-20 loss to the Ravens, the Patriots coaching staff has a lot of holes to fill.

Here are three areas the Patriots coaching staff has to address during the bye week.

1. Get the O-line right: Injuries have been a problem with the Patriots offensive line. Not having David Andrews at center has been an issue and defenses have exploited that by pressuring A gap and B gap on a more consistent basis.

Left tackle has also been an issue with Isaiah Wynn hurt. Veteran Marshall Newhouse has struggled mightily. Wynn is scheduled to return this week so at least the Patriots can secure the left side and give Tom Brady more protection.

Even with the return of Wynn, offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia needs to get more out of this group. Particularly the right side. Both Shaq Mason and Marcus Cannon have struggled. They need to play better and this group as a whole needs to play at the level they did last season.

2. Stop the run: The Ravens embarrassed the Patriots on the ground two weeks ago but the reality is, the Patriots run defense hasn’t been good all season. Despite them playing at a historic level the first half of the season, teams have had success running the ball, especially inside the tackles. The Patriots must do a better job of gap controlling the line of scrimmage and getting their run fits. If they don’t, teams like the Eagles and Cowboys will exploit their front seven.

3. Roster configuration: Despite being 8-1, the Patriots have an unbalanced roster. The offensive line lacks depth and the tight end position is non-existent. Some way, some how, Belichick needs to address this. Getting back Wynn, N’Keal Harry, Matt LaCosse and Ryan Izzo will help but is it enough? Time will tell. Right now, the Patriots are lacking some necessary pieces on offense and it shows with the inconsistency on that side of the ball.

The bye comes at the right time for the Patriots. Some of the fundamental issues that have plagued this team are correctable. It is the roster however configuration, especially on offense that is most concerning.
