Relax, I’m not saying he should be fired on Monday.
However, when you look at the big picture since 2019, it’s hard to believe the Krafts aren’t starting to wonder the same thing at this point. Brady’s tenure here ended in ugly fashion and eventually, would you really be stunned if there was a “mutual parting of ways” after 22 seasons here?
Most people can’t stand their boss after 22 days. 22 years is an outrageous amount of time for a partnership to last.
The list of legitimate reasons to finally sever ties is growing longer for the Krafts too. Letting Brady leave because of ego will forever be the one you can’t forgive. Then, the signing (and re-signing) of Cam Newton while missing the postseason. This year, the Pats won seven straight and were holding the No. 1 seed in the AFC through 13 weeks. Bill was in the midst of one of his greatest coaching jobs ever, only to have the team implode after a late bye week, finish as the six seed and then lose by 30 to an AFC East rival in the Wild Card game. The team didn’t JUST lose by 30, it was arguably the most humiliating loss in the history of the franchise right next to the 46-10 Super Bowl loss to the Bears.
Yes, it was that bad.
If you really want to know where the list starts for the Krafts, well that’s easy, it’s Spygate. Then Deflategate. Then most recently, Spygate II with Cincinnati. You can also add in the inability to find legitimate receivers pretty much ever in his tenure (Julian Edelman was a quarterback, it literally doesn’t count), continuing to hire a coaching staff with questionable qualifications (not at all positions obviously, but some) and seemingly just throwing draft picks away at times prior to this past draft when he basically had no choice but to take Jones.
Bill Belichick is the greatest coach of all time and very well may want to coach until he reaches the wins record set by Don Shula. The problem is, it just might not be able to be here.
Robert Kraft isn’t getting any younger and you’ve got to think that Jonathan will be taking over sooner rather than later. Don’t you think the guy who single-handily saved the franchise from St. Louis or Connecticut would want to have a chance to put a new guy in charge before handing things over? Sure, Jonathan could do it, but it seems like Robert would still want to be in on that one before stepping aside.
There very well could be a ton of turnover coming with the coaching staff and the roster as well. Hightower, Slater and McCourty may all be retiring. Coach McDaniels and Coach Mayo may be getting opportunities to become head coaches. Do the Krafts really want Bill filling those positions after giving so many guys jobs in recent years that probably didn’t deserve to be at the NFL level yet? At some point, the bandaid has to just get ripped off.
The franchise is at a very strange spot right now and the Krafts have to start doing some serious soul searching. It may not be time for a move just yet, but that day is coming sooner than people would like to admit.
