The Patriots are shopping defensive tackle Davon Godchaux. Godchaux has two years remaining on his contract, including $16.5 million in guaranteed money. He is scheduled to earn salaries of $4 million in 2025 and $5.5 million in 2026.
The 6’3 330 pound Godchaux is not a scheme fit in the new Patriots defensive scheme and the team told his agent that he can seek a trade.
Given what he is owed, the Patriots will have a hard time finding any takers. Even if they do, the return will be minimal because of Godchaux’s contract.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and defensive coordinator Terrell Williams want to play more of an attacking, one gap defense where defensive lineman get upfield and make plays at the line of scrimmage. Godchaux is more of a two-gap player that eats up blocks and frees up second level defenders. Add his contact to the equation and you see why the Patriots want to move on.
With Godchaux potentially on the move and the uncertainty of Christian Barmore due to blood clot issues, defensive tackle all of a sudden has become a priority position for the Patriots. One that they will address in free agency and the draft.
Regardless of their situation, do not expect anything more than a late day three pick for Godchaux if a team even trades for him.
