The highly anticipated Will Grier debut some Patriots fans were hoping for is not going to happen. Grier was released today to open up a roster spot ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Giants.
If the Patriots do make a quarterback change moving forward, it is going to be Bailey Zappe who takes over for the beleaguered Mac Jones.
Grier’s release comes as a surprise but it really shouldn’t. The Patriots have made 15 quarterback related moves since March since it is par for the course for an organization that has not had quarterback stability the past two seasons.
The Patriots traditionally have never carried three quarterbacks on the active roster so the fact that they were carrying Grier was a surprise. Despite that, he never did enough in practice to separate himself or put himself in the mix. Ultimately, he became expendable.
Moving forward, the Patriots are going to move forward with Jones and Zappe. They were never going to bench Jones for the reminder of the season. That media fodder. The Patriots are going to play out the string with two quarterbacks who are not in the their future plans.
As frustrating as that is, Jones and Zappe are probably the right quarterbacks to carry moving forward.
