Patriots: Recapping Bill Belichick’s weekly OMF interview on WEEI

We’re taking a different approach this week.

After arguably the interview of the year so far last week following the Buffalo loss, Bill Belichick’s weekly appearance with Ordway, Merloni and Fauria was another all-timer for awkward silence on Tuesday. More importantly, it was another fantastic segment where Bill opened up a bit more than he normally would. In fairness – as Ordway pointed out to start the interview – a win over the Jets is always a good mood starter for the coach.

Instead of going back through what he had to say about that putrid win against the Jets on Monday night, here’s a few things that stood out to us regarding things other than the 30-27 victory…

LEAVING THE JETS IN THE HANGAR

Bill Belichick’s famous resignation on a cocktail napkin “I resign as HC of the NYJ” will live in the rivalry’s history forever. We’ve got to work backwards this week, because this topic closed the interview for about two minutes. Ordway mentioned to Belichick as things were wrapping up that ESPN had showed a quick clip of that press conference.

Suddenly, Belichick said “not only one of the most defining, but also one of the great moments of my career.”

“That, combined with Robert (Kraft) giving me the opportunity to come here, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. That wasn’t a good situation for me and I didn’t want to be a part of it, so I wasn’t,” he added.

DEALING WITH THE RAVENS AND LAMAR JACKSON

One of if not the best player in the league comes to town Sunday night as the Ravens and Lamar Jackson visit. Fauria asked Belichick if it’s more important to have guys that are fast and can play in space rather than just throwing a bunch of speedy guys out there hoping they can corral the dangerous QB.

“Well, (Baltimore) does a good job of getting into space, but, they also have a power downhill running game,” Belichick said. “A lot of double team blocks, a lot of power type of running that if you’re too small in there and don’t hold up against those plays that’s a problem too. They have good speed, and they also have good size and power so, you have to be ready to defend all of it.

“Jackson’s a problem, the running game’s a problem, explosive receivers, Andrews is an excellent receiving tight end. Third down, red area, he’s an excellent target with great hands so there’s a lot to worry about there. You can’t just go into the game and say we’re going to shut down one guy.”

REMEMBERING TOMMY HEINSOHN

There was sad news Tuesday afternoon that Celtics legend Tommy Heinsohn passed away at the age of 86. Merloni asked Bill if he had gotten to know him or had any interaction over the years.

“I did get to know Tommy, really through Linda (Holliday) when she was working for Style Boston,” Belichick explained. “She interviewed him and then after that got to spend some time with him, saw him several times at Celtics games. Those are always great to attend and I’d see Tommy before the game or at halftime and then obviously listened to him broadcast a lot go games.

“What a tremendous career he had as a player and a coach and even as a broadcaster to bring so many great Celtics moments to the fans and the community. He had such a great connection wit the entire Boston community, fan base, obviously Celtics fans but other sports fans in Boston connected to him and the Celtics. He was an awesome guy. Linda told me after she interviewed him what an amazing guy he was and how much she enjoyed taking to him. It was an honor and a pleasure to get to know him, he was a wonderful man.”

STUNNINGLY, BELICHICK NOT A COFFEE DRINKER

If you love awkward silence then Fauria saved the best for last with the Mercedes Benz Question the week. Belichick was asked why he doesn’t drink coffee (this was made public knowledge in his pregame interview with Scott Zolak on Monday night). After at least 5-6 seconds, Belichick simply said “Because I don’t like coffee.”

Fauria pushed a little more and Belichick went on to ruin any future opportunities for Starbucks or Dunkin endorsements.

“I understand I’m probably missing it but, I don’t like coffee, I can’t stand the smell of coffee, I don’t like coffee ice cream. I like every sweet that’s ever been made but that’s not one of them. I just don’t like coffee flavored anything, I’ve tried, it just doesn’t work for me. My grandmother poured me a glass of milk and like a thimble of coffee and I couldn’t even drink that.

“I haven’t been able to develop a taste for scotch either. I tried that I just couldn’t develop a taste for it. Nothing against coffee, nothing against Dunkin Donuts, nothing against anything, it’s just not for me.”
