Patriots: Quinn Nordin making the most of unexpected opportunity

We’ve all been there at one point or another.

Looking on LinkedIn, completely unsure of what the future holds, praying that something falls into your lap.

Patriots kicker Quinn Nordin was just like us, debating on his next step in life after going undrafted out of Michigan when he got a phone call from the Patriots. Now, with veteran Nick Folk missing time in training camp, Nordin has taken an unexpected opportunity and ran with it. After going 10-for-10 in Friday night’s season ticket holder’s practice – including a 57 yard bomb that would’ve been good from 62 – there’s a real case to be made for Nordin to earn the job.

“I was on LinkedIn looking at jobs, I was thinking about maybe going to the military,” Nordin (pronounced Nor-deen) said on Monday. “The Patriots were my only call, I’m here, I’m doing the best I can, so that’s it…I was literally on LinkedIn typing ‘what to do after college,’ anything and everything, but I’m happy I’m here. Just trying to work hard and do the best I can.”

Nordin acknowledged it’s been a bit of a whirlwind and he hasn’t wanted to step on anyone’s toes. He wasn’t even correcting people when they were pronouncing his last name.

“In the building everyone was calling me Nord-in,” he said. “They were like why didn’t you tell anyone your last name’s not Nord-in? and I just didn’t say anything.”

Nordin has done a good job of taking the day-by-day approach even though his head may be spinning at times.

“It’s been a lot to take in,” he admitted. “It’s been cool, but I’m just trying to learn honestly. We’ve got some great vets on this team and I’m trying to learn from all of them and take everything one day at a time.”

As you’d expect with any young player, even team meetings are a bit of an eye opener right now. Nordin has been a bit starstruck, but also knows he’s got some fantastic guys to learn from.

“This is a great opportunity and the staff here is tremendous,” he said. “I get to go into a meeting every day and Coach Belichick is there, that’s so cool. Just learn. You’ve got some great men on this team. Matt Slater…I try to mimic everything he does. From cold tubs, to epsom salt baths, I try to mimic him in every sense. He’s a great leader and a great teammate.”

As for his big night on Friday, what did Nordin think of his performance in front of Pats fans for the first time?

“It was cool, it was cool to get in the stadium,” Nordin said. “It was cool to kind of get the feel of organized football back, but we’ve got to pump the brakes and remember it’s just practice. It was just another day. Today was practice, tomorrow will be be another practice. There will be another practice day after that and then we’ve got a game.”

It’s like Nordin studied the Belichick poetry book or something.

Whatever he’s doing, the rookie is making quite a name for himself and most importantly he’s shown Belichick and the staff that he may have what it takes to permanently kick for the Patriots once September rolls around.
