FOXBOROUGH – If you’ve seen any of the postgame locker room Patriots videos following victories this year, you might have noticed that something is different.
For over two decades, the famous ‘How do we feel about a victory? Awww yeahhh!’ chant started by Tedy Bruschi, continued by Matt Slater and then delegated among a few different guys last year (albeit only four times) had been a staple in the road and home locker rooms.
But, this season, it’s been a simple ‘Team!” or “Pats!” breakdown after a victory speech from Vrabel. Sometimes, he’s the one leading the final break, sometimes it’s a player. Against Buffalo, it was fittingly Stefon Diggs.
It’s a small, subtle little shift, but it’s another sign of different times in Foxborough.
I asked Vrabel about it on Monday morning. Did he always break the team down when he was head coach of the Titans? Is the new saying or chant something that was discussed with captains?
Turns out, I (and hopefully some other fans that may have noticed it) are just overthinking it way too much.
“Sometimes I break them down, sometimes I don’t. I don’t know if there’s a real rhythm to that or cadence,” Vrabel said. “Don’t really have a plan for it. And then I’ve never even given any thought to the “aw yeah” as much as we did it as a player. I think that’s just a different team. We don’t really practice the post-game celebrations. ”
However it came to be, the Pats have been able to celebrate four times already this season matching the total from each of the last two seasons.
If the winning continues, Vrabel doesn’t care how it looks or sounds, as long as it’s loud and as long as the guys embrace how difficult it is to win in the NFL.
“That’s not something that we have on a practice script, but we’d like to continue to celebrate wins any way that the players want. I’m all for it,” he added.
