The Patriots made a big trade this afternoon trading for wide receiver DeVante Parker and a fifth round pick. In return, the Patriots surrendered a 2023 third round pick.
Parker was selected with the 14th pick in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He played in 10 games last season catching 40 passes for 515 yards and two touchdowns.
Parker is signed for two more years and is scheduled to earn $6 million this season. At 6-3 220, he profiles as an X receiver (split end) who can generate one in one match ups underneath and over the top in the red zone.
By acquiring Parker, the Patriots can now use their other receivers more in the slot. Nelson Agholor, Jakobi Meyers and Kendrick Bourne are effective out of the slot and can generate match-ups against nickel corners and safeties in 11 personnel.
Perhaps the biggest thing Parker gives the Patriots is a vertical threat that can take the top off of coverage. The Patriots haven’t had that type of receiver really since Randy Moss. Parker is no Randy Moss but he is certainly capable of being a big play threat.
The Patriots gave up a pick next year that they will recoup later in the third round. They will receive a compensatory pick for losing J.C Jackson to the Chargers.
The Patriots have quietly had a good off-season. Bill Belichick has made several shrewd moves that could prove to be good moves if the players acquired stay healthy and play to their potential.
The Patriots got better today thanks to divisional opponent that they never do business with. Parker should fit in nicely in New England’s system.
