Patriots: Patriots should be active today but they won’t

The NFL trade deadline is today and several NFL teams that are contending will look to improve their roster. One of those teams should be the Patriots.

The Patriots can either upgrade their roster or use the deadline to acquire future draft capital by trading a player like N’Keal Harry.

New England could use another playmaker on offense so perhaps they could use Harry and a late round pick to try and trade for someone like old friend Brandon Cooks who will most certainly be moved today by the Houston Texans.

If the Texans aren’t interested in Harry, the Patriots could still trade for Cooks but the price might be too high so they could look for cheaper alternatives at wide receiver like the Jaguars Chris Conley and the Lions Tom Kennedy who could be a great fit because he returns kicks as well. Plus, Kennedy has local ties. He played at Bryant, the former training camp home of the Patriots.

Bill Belichick could also try to upgrade at other positions. Offensive line, EDGE and defensive back are all areas the Patriots could use an upgrade in.

Offensive line isn’t a priority but adding a veteran edge rusher or depth in the secondary are both possibilities.

Belichick hasn’t traditionally been active at the deadline but with the Patriots at 4-4 and in the thick of it in the AFC, a trade would make a lot of sense. If the price is right of course.

Tuesdays are usually the players day off. Today however will not be an ordinary Tuesday. I am sure the phone will be ringing a little bit more than usual. It will be interesting to see Belichick answers it. My gut instinct is, he won’t.
