The Patriots made a big move on Tuesday morning, literally and figuratively by acquiring old friend Trent Brown from the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Patriots acquired Brown and a seventh-round pick in 2022 from the Raiders in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Brown, who played well in his lone season in New England has a agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $11 million. Brown originally had two years and $30 million dollars left on his deal with the Raiders.
So, what does the Brown acquisition mean for the Patriots? It more than likely spells the end of Joe Thuney’s tenure in New England. Thuney, an unrestricted free agent is expected to command between $14-$16 million per season on the open market.
It also means that the end for Isaiah Wynn at left tackle. Barring the Patriots cutting Marcus Cannon, Brown will more than likely slot in at left tackle and Wynn will kick inside to play left guard. The Patriots know what they have in Brown as a left tackle and by moving Wynn inside, it will give them a chance to evaluate him as a guard.
Brown could be the first of several acquisitions by the Patriots in the next ten days. Expect Bill Belichick to be active as he tries to re-tool the roster after a 7-9 season in 2020.
