As if winning your 200th career game isn’t a big enough thrill, Bishop Fenwick head coach David Woods received another honor on Tuesday.
The Patriots named Woods the Week 3 Coach of the Week on Tuesday after Fenwick hammered Bishop Stang 39-7 at home last weekend.
Woods is now just the 58th coach in Massachusetts high school football history to win 200 or more games, an incredible feat and a testament to his consistency over close to three decades. Woods has been the head coach at Fenwick for a whopping 27 years and there seems to be no sign of slowing down.
“To get 200 wins means you’ve been lucky to be at one place for so long, and I’ve been lucky,” Woods said in a statement released by the Patriots. “I’ve had great support from so many people, and I’ve been lucky to have a lot of really good players.”
Executive Director of Community Affairs and Pats Hall of Fame Andre Tippett made the trip to present the award to Woods with seniors and cheerleaders on hand. The Patriots – in conjunction with the NFL – have been presenting ‘Coach of the Week’ awards for 29 years now. This is Tippet’s 13th season handing out the award on a weekly basis at each high school. Each winning coach also receives a $1,000 donation from the Kraft family and Patriots Charitable Foundation.
“In a triumphant culmination to homecoming weekend, the Bishop Fenwick football team delivered a commanding victory, a fitting testament to Coach Woods’ leadership and the team’s excellence,” Tippett said in the statement.
At the end of the 2024 season, one of the winners from the year will be named the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Year and will also get an additional $2,000 contribution for that school’s football program. All of the winners are also recognized at a game at Gillette Stadium later in the season.
