Patriots: Meyers signing his second round tender should open the door to a long term deal

Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers signed his second round tender on Monday. The one year deal is worth $3.986 million dollars for the 2022 season.

Meyers waited to sign his tender which may hint at how he feels about the second round tender but nonetheless he is signed through next season.

The Patriots now have time to negotiate with the 25 year old former undrafted free agent. Meyers had a career year last season catching 83 passes for 866 yards and two touchdown receptions. He is reliable and you can make the argument that he might be the Patriots best receiver.

Despite that, Meyers is not a top tier receiver so what is he worth per season? That depends on how he and his agent Drew Rosenhaus view his value and how the Patriots view his value.

Bill Belichick has always shown a willingness to extend home grown talent so you have to think that the two sides can work something out before Meyers hits free agency next off-season.

One potential snag could be the fact that the Patriots have a lot of big contracts on the books for 2023 and beyond so that could also be a determining factor as to whether or not they can pay Meyers.

Either way you look at it, if Meyers has another season statistically like he did last season, he is going to get paid. Whether it is here or somewhere else.

Meyers deserves a long term deal. Let’s see if he gets it in New England or somewhere else. As always. Time will tell.
