The NFL reinstated embattled wide receiver Josh Gordon on Friday. Gordon was indefinitely suspended in December for violating the league’s substance policy. After being in a treatment the past few months, the league is once again giving him another chance.
By all accounts, Gordon isn’t just a great player, he is a good person as well. Gordon’s teammates in both Cleveland and New England speak highly about him on a personal level. They legitimately want to see him succeed.
If Gordon is going to turn his life around, he not only needs the support of the organization. He needs the support of his teammates as well.
If Gordon can find a way to stay sober and focus on football, he is poised to have a big year.
Gordon flashed glimpses of what he could do last season when he caught 41 passes for 737 yards and 4 touchdowns. Gordon could double those numbers over the course of a full season. Especially with Rob Gronkowski retired. There are more available targets now.
As he has shown throughout his career, Gordon has all the physical tools to be an elite receiver. With the Patriots emphasizing size at the position now, Gordon could be a real weapon. He is comfortable playing in the system and is on the same page with Tom Brady.
The Patriots need Gordon to stay clean and commit to his sobriety. This is more than likely his last chance (although I feel like we have said this before) at turning his life and career around. Gordon is special and he can do special things in New England. He is poised for a big season if he stays on track.
