The Patriots have a new quarterbacks coach. T.C McCartney was hired as the team’s new quarterback coach on Wednesday.
McCartney comes from the Cleveland Browns where he served as tight ends coach last season and worked alongside new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
The 34 year old McCartney has coached with the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and the Browns during his seven year NFL career. He has coached two separate stints with both the 49ers and the Browns. His only season coaching quarterbacks was 2019 with the Broncos.
McCartney will have one of the most important jobs on the Patriots staff. He will be in charge of developing the team’s quarterbacks, whether it is Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe or a rookie. All eyes will be on on him to see how he develops the quarterbacks this season. If he does a good job, it will create opportunities for as a possible coordinator position with other organizations.
The quarterbacks coach is just as important as the offensive coordinator when it comes to the development of a quarterback. They meet with them, install with them and most importantly, they teach them how to play the position fundamentally within the offense.
McCartney will be charged with teaching the quarterbacks the West Coast offense. It will be entirely new for all the quarterbacks on the roster so they will be starting from the ground up.
