Patriots: Get to know the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

We all know Tom Brady is coming back so we don’t have to talk about that.

Instead, let’s focus on who coaches the Tampa Buccaneers, what they are going to do schematically and who else is on the team besides Brady and Rob Gronkowski.

Here’s a look at the Bucs

Head Coach: Bruce Arians

Offensive Coordinator: Byron Leftwich

Defensive Coordinator: Todd Bowles

Special Teams: Keith Armstrong

Offense

Tampa Bay is a heavy 11 and 12 personnel team. They predominantly run those two personnel groupings. With Gronkowski out tonight, you could see more 10 personnel as a change up.

The Buccaneers are an inside zone, midzone, outside zone team in the run game. Tampa will run some man gap schemes like one back power but for the most part, they will zone block everything in the running game.

Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich are not big gadget or trick play guys but don’t be surprised if you see something like a flea flicker early in the game. Especially if they are in plus territory.

Just like last week, Tampa will run a variety of empty formations. Brady likes compressed empty formations and he likes to motion to compressed formations.

Expect the halfbacks to be heavily involved in the passing game. Whether it be out of the backfield or on perimeter screens, expect the backs to get touches in the passing game.

Defense

The Buccaneers are a 3-4 base but they will play a variety of fronts including 20 and 40 fronts as well.

Todd Bowles likes to blitz but not as much as you think. Tampa brings five most times and on occasion they’ll bring six. They rely mostly on base pressure. Given their injuries in the secondary, Bowles probably won’t bring as much pressure tonight.

Tampa will use a nickel package but they hardly go dime. They like to play in their base package as much as possible.

Given the amount of injuries Tampa has on the back end, you would think the Bucs would play more zone coverage tonight. They won’t. Instead, they will play the same amount of man coverage they always do. They won’t respect this New England skill group.

Tampa uses a deep rotation along the defensive line. Even with Jason Pierre Paul out, the Buccaneers will rotate their defensive lineman throughout the game. Expect six different lineman to play.
