Patriots: Get to know the Chargers

The Patriots travel to Los Angeles to take on the Chargers. The last time these two teams met was last season. The Patriots won that meeting 45-0.

The Patriots lead the regular season series 23-14-2. The teams have met four times in the postseason with the Patriots holding a 3-1 advantage.

Here is what you need to know about the Chargers.

Head Coach: Brandon Staley

Offensive Coordinator: Joe Lombardi

Defensive Coordinator: Renaldo Hill

Special Teams: Derrius Swinton

Offense

The Chargers conceptually run a lot of the same stuff that the Saints run due to Lombardi’s history with the team. You’ll see a lot of 11, 12, 21 and 22 personnel. They will also compress formations.

The Chargers will utilize a lot of dueces and trips formations. They try to isolate their receivers and generate match ups. They will try to isolate Keenan Allen back side all afternoon.

Expect Austin Eckler to get multiple touches. Draws, screens and in the slot as a receiver.

Expect Justin Herbert to run zone read plays especially in the red zone.

The Chargers utilize a lot of crossing routes. Mesh, drive and dig, in high low concepts are all pass concepts the Patriots will see today.

Defense

The Chargers are multiple on defense. The Patriots will see 40 and 30 fronts.

The Chargers will play a lot of two high looks. They will rotate their safeties a lot and screw them down into the box.

Staley doesn’t blitz a ton but when he does, it is most edge pressure including slot and corner blitzes.

The Patriots tackles will get a lot of wide five and wide nine techniques. Joey Bosa in particular will line up in a tilt technique and line up wide.

The Chargers will play a lot of match up zone. They will route read with their corners and safeties.
