The Patriots host the Jets in a game they should win. From a matchup standpoint, the Jets are weak. Their roster is not very good so the Patriots should have an advantage across the board. Here is how the Patriots should attack them on offense and defense.
Offense
Throw it all three levels: The entire passing game will be there this week against the Jets. I would throw three step, play-action, 5 step and 7 step. The Patriots should be able to protect against the Jets anemic pass rush and should be able to throw the ball against a secondary that is 24th in overall passing efficiency and one of the worst secondaries in the league.
Gun Runs: The Jets defense has struggled to defend gun runs and nickel runs this season. Expect a heavy dose of inside zone, one back power, wham and trap as the Patriots use 10 and 11 personnel to spread out the Jets and create room for the run game.
Get into empty: I would like to see the Patriots get into some empty tonight and spread the Jets and throw to space. Drake Maye can thrive in the Patriots empty passing game. Working tonight for the future would be a good thing. The more reps he has in it, the better. The Jets secondary, especially their nickel and dime personnel have struggled. It doesn’t help that the Jets get no pressure.
Get the screen game going: I would throw a variety of screens at this Jets defense. Running back screens, perimeter screens, and even a tight end screen should all be in the game plan. Call them on unpredictable downs and take advantage of a defense that can be undisciplined and plays up field too much.
RPO’s: Utilize RPO’s to take advantage of the Jets aggressiveness and playing out of position at times. If the Patriots could establish their running game and then throw the RPO’s off of it, it would be a good way to develop this part of the offense.
Defense
Sugar Rush Fields: Justin Fields can be dangerous when he exits the pocket. He can extend plays and put a lot of pressure on the defense. It is imperative that the Patriots sugar rush him and not allow him to break contain and get outside. If he is allowed to extend plays with his legs, he will be a problem.
Sim & Disguise: Patriots need to move around a lot in this game defensively. Don’t allow Fields to get comfortable reading his progression. Cloud the picture for him and force him to throw the ball in areas he shouldn’t. Fields will turn the ball over if he feels like he is going to get pressured and start abandoning his reads. Make him uncomfortable by creating confusion.
Drop Woodson into the box: The Patriots will need to take away running back Breece Hall and the best way to do that is by playing more eight man fronts. Expect safety Craig Woodson to drop to the box often tonight in a SKY force call and give the Patriots more eight man fronts. Stopping Hall and the ground game is the priority.
Bring 5 and 6 man pressures: The Patriots have to bring pressure tonight, especially from depth. The linebackers and safeties have to be involved in pressure packages. The Jets are 25th in the NFL in passing against pressure. Run T-E stunts up front and blend them with depth and delay pressure. Fields doesn’t handle pressure well. Hitting him consistently will force him to get rid of the ball quicker.
30 Fronts: With Hall being the focal point, the Patriots may need to run more 30 fronts in this game if he is running the football effectively early on. 30 fronts allow the Patriots to two gap and put their bigger personnel in the game.
